Airpeace CEO advocates for Nigerian coach for Super Eagles amidst managerial vacancy

Following the expiration of Jose Peseiro’s contract in February, leaving the Super Eagles without a permanent coach, Allen Onyema, CEO of Airpeace, has raised concerns about hiring another foreign coach to lead the national team.

With Finidi George currently serving as interim coach, Onyema emphasised the need to explore local talent for the coaching position. “I don’t see the reason why we cannot have a look into the country and get somebody out there that will take on the Super Eagles job,” he stated, pointing out the successes of Nigerian coaches like Eguavoen.

He criticized the tendency to overlook Nigerian coaches, highlighting the double standards in expectations between foreign and domestic coaches. “Nobody gives Nigerian coaches a chance,” he asserted, urging Nigerians to resist the appointment of foreign coaches.

Meanwhile, amidst discussions about the coaching situation, the Super Eagles secured a hard-fought victory against Ghana’s Black Stars, triumphing 2-1 with goals from Cyril Dessers and Ademola Lookman.

Now, they are gearing up for another friendly encounter against Mali today, in Marakech, Morocco.

Another victory will see Finidi George boost his chances of overtaking favourite Emmanuel Amunike in the race for the Super Eagles coaching job.
