Aiyegbeni Picks Osimhen, Bassey, Lookman and Iwobi as Nigeria’s Best in Europe

Former Super Eagles striker Yakubu Aiyegbeni has praised Victor Osimhen, Calvin Bassey, Ademola Lookman and Alex Iwobi as the four Nigerian players who are standing out in Europe today.

Aiyegbeni, Nigeria’s highest-scoring player in Premier League history, said the four players show the fighting spirit and attitude needed as the country prepares for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. But he made it clear that Osimhen is still the clear leader among them.

Speaking about Osimhen, Aiyegbeni said the striker has become the driving force of the national team. He described him as a leader who shows aggression, energy and full commitment every time he plays.

Aiyegbeni also praised Calvin Bassey, saying the defender has become a strong and reliable presence for Nigeria. He said Bassey always gives his best and has been a solid part of the team.

He then spoke about Ademola Lookman, admitting that the winger has struggled with form this season after issues with his club. However, Aiyegbeni still believes Lookman is a very good player and hopes he returns to top form before the Africa Cup of Nations. He said Nigeria missed Lookman in recent qualifiers because he was not playing at his best.

Aiyegbeni also mentioned Alex Iwobi, saying the midfielder works hard and has been performing well. But he added that Nigeria still lacks a true creative midfielder who can make key forward passes. He said Iwobi is energetic but not the type of player who regularly creates chances like his uncle, Jay-Jay Okocha. According to him, this lack of creativity is one of the main problems facing the team.

With the Africa Cup of Nations kicking off on 21 December, Osimhen, Bassey, Lookman and Iwobi are all expected to be part of Nigeria’s squad. All four players were important in the team’s run to last year’s final.
