Akpeyi shouldn’t suffer for going to AFCON start him against Golden Arrows – Shongwe
Former Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper William Shongwe has backed Daniel Akpeyi to regain his number one position as the Amakhosi host Golden Arrow in a league game today.
Daniel Akpeyi is yet to play a single game since he returned from the African Cup of Nations where he represented Nigeria.
The 35-year-old goalkeeper was the first team goalkeeper for Kaizer Chief before going to Cameroon but since he got back he has been mostly named on the bench and sometimes not listed for the game at all.
With injury to Brandon Petersen the new starting goalkeeper, William Shongwe has advised Kaizer Chief to restore Daniel Akpeyi as the number one.
“I know Bruce was being selected as cover on the bench so there’s no doubt about his ability,” Shongwe told the media.
“But he is more of a project that is being built for the long-term.
“That’s why even Hugo Broos has opted for him because he’s the future.
“But when it comes to playing now, I think Akpeyi would be my choice as he was first-choice before the Afcon tournament.
“Khune did well during the DStv Compact Cup and he really took his opportunity.
“But what reason would you give for not selecting Akpeyi who had gone on international duty.
“It’s not like he absconded, he went to represent his country at a high-profile tournament, he shouldn’t suffer for that.
“So for me, he would be the next in line for selection.”Shongwe advises Chiefs to select Akpeyi over Khune
