Akpom plays down talk of Ajax top-striker tussle with Weghorst
Nigerian striker Chuba Akpom has said he is not focused on becoming Ajax’s first-choice striker over Wout Weghorst, who used to play for Manchester United.
Akpom has had a good season with Ajax, but he has had to compete for a spot in the team. Ajax has many strong attackers, including Brian Brobbey and Weghorst, who joined last summer. Akpom has scored three goals and made one assist in 16 Eredivisie games.
One of his goals came last weekend in Ajax’s 2-0 win against Heerenveen, where Akpom scored the second goal to help his team win.
After the match, Akpom was asked if he should be the main striker for Ajax. He avoided giving a direct answer, saying his main focus is on the team’s success.
“I’m not going to say anything about that. It’s not up to me. I just give my best. I may think differently, but you can’t be selfish in this situation,” Akpom said, according to Ajaxshowtime. “There is a bigger plan, and everyone must work together. The most important thing is that I give everything when I play.”
Ajax is currently in second place in the Eredivisie, one point behind PSV Eindhoven. The team hopes Akpom will get more chances to play and help them win the title this season.
