Akwa Ibom Kicks Off State Trials for Niger Delta Games 2026

Akwa Ibom has officially begun its state trials for the second Niger Delta Games Edo 2026, following the completion of Local Government trials.
The five-day trials opened on Thursday with Taekwondo taking centre stage at Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, setting a high standard for the other sports.
After intense and fast-paced competition across the different Taekwondo events, eight out of twelve registered fighters were chosen to represent the state at the Games, including four males and four females.
Speaking at the venue, the Honourable Commissioner for Sports, Elder Paul Bassey, represented by the state’s Director of Coaching, Mrs Catherine Ewa, praised the athletes’ energy, skill, and determination.
“We registered twelve extremely young and vibrant fighters on the Games’ portal, but unfortunately only eight can be selected,” she said.
“I am happy to witness the high level of competitiveness these youngsters have shown today, and I am very positive about the future of sports in our state.”
One of the selected female fighters, Victory Charles, expressed her excitement after making the team.
“I’m very happy to be selected, and I promise to represent my state to the best of my ability,” she said.
“I thank the organisers for giving me the platform to showcase my talents, and I promise not to disappoint them.”
The second Niger Delta Games, sponsored by the Niger Delta Development Commission and organised by Dunamis-Icon Limited, will take place from February 20 to 27 in Edo State. All nine states of the Niger Delta region will compete.
