Akwa Ibom State FA Hails ‘True Son of the Soil’ William Troost-Ekong After International Retirement
The Akwa Ibom State Football Association has joined the global football community in celebrating Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong following his retirement from international football.
Troost-Ekong, who earned 83 caps for Nigeria and represented the country at five major tournaments, announced his retirement on 4 December 2025 after a decade of service.
Speaking on behalf of the association, Akwa Ibom State FA Chairman, Mr. Samuel Umoh, described Troost-Ekong as a “true son of the soil” who brought pride to the state through his leadership, hard work, and patriotism.
Mr. Umoh said:
“William Troost-Ekong has made Akwa Ibom State extremely proud. His time with the Super Eagles showed true commitment, courage, and discipline. On the field, he gave everything for Nigeria. Off the field, he carried himself with dignity and humility.”
He also praised Troost-Ekong’s impact beyond football, especially through the William Troost-Ekong Foundation, which has supported young people and promoted sports development.
“We are proud not only of his football achievements but also of the work he is doing through his foundation,” Mr. Umoh added. “His efforts off the pitch continue to touch lives and inspire the next generation. We hope his foundation will keep growing and help produce many more great players”
The chairman described Ekong’s retirement as “the beginning of another great chapter,” noting that his legacy will remain a strong motivation for young footballers.
“He is our son, and we will always celebrate him. We wish him success in whatever comes next.”
Troost-Ekong leaves international football as one of Nigeria’s most respected modern defenders, with medals from three tournaments and the 2023 AFCON MVP award.
