Akwa United reveals Identity of new players in quest for redemption
After a tough start to the 2024/2025 season, Akwa United FC has unveiled the names of its new signings as they prepare for the second half of the season. The club is determined to turn things around and climb the league table, beginning with their match on Sunday.
The team, currently in 19th place after the first round, has made some key changes, including the return of coach Kennedy Boboye. Boboye, who guided Akwa United to their first-ever league title in 2021, is now back at the helm. He is joined by assistant coach Ifeanyi Nwachukwu, as well as other new technical staff members, following the resignation of coach Muhammed Babaganaru.
To bolster the squad, Akwa United has secured the services of several players. These include forwards Uche Sabastine from PSports Academy and Orji Chisom from Sporting Lagos, midfielders Ogar Sabastine and Samuel Tochukwu, both from PSports Academy, and defender Adamu Umar from Sunshine Stars. Additionally, right-back Asuquo Etiene has returned to the team after a loan spell at Dakkada FC.
The club has also been preparing for the second half of the season with a series of friendly matches. Akwa United recorded a 5-0 victory over Immortality Academy, followed by a 3-0 win against NNL side Godswill Akpabio United FC. Their most recent friendly ended in a 1-1 draw with NPFL outfit Abia Warriors.
Akwa United’s redemption mission will kick off at home against league leaders Remo Stars at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium on Sunday. This will be their first league match of the new year, and they will be looking to improve on their first-round performance.
Coach Boboye will be hoping for a strong start, with top scorers Chijioke Alaekwe and Friday Apollos – who have netted nine goals between them – expected to continue their impressive form. Akwa United will also be keen to extend their excellent record against Remo Stars, having won six out of the ten matches played between the two teams.
The second stanza of the season will be crucial for Akwa United’s quest for redemption, and the team is determined to make a strong push up the table. Fans will be hoping that the new signings and a renewed focus under Coach Boboye will bring success in the months ahead.
