Al Ahly crowned CAF Champions League winners

Egyptian club Al Ahly have been crowned CAF Champions League winners for the 2022/2023 season following a 2-3 aggregate win over Wydad Casablanca.

In the final match decided over two-legs, Al Ahly won the first leg in Egypt 2-1 before holding the Moroccan club to a 1-1 draw on Saturday evening to be crowned Champions for a record 11th time.

A repeat of the 2022 final, this time it was the Reds who had the last laugh, avenging their 2-0 loss from the last edition.

Yahya Attiat-Allah scored with a free-kick to Wydad Casablanca ahead in the second leg and level on aggregate 2-2.

The Moroccan side were still searching for the second goal to lead on aggregate when Al Ahly struck in the 77th minute to settle the contest.

Mohamed Abdelmomen rose highest to send a looping header into the net from Ali Maloul’s cross.

In the end, it finished Wydad Casablanca  2-3 Al Ahly. And so the Egyptians triumphed again but it was another win to underline North Africa’s dominance of club football in Africa.
