Alex Iwobi Reacts to Troost-Ekong’s Shock Retirement Ahead of AFCON
Fulham midfielder Alex Iwobi has spoken about William Troost-Ekong’s unexpected retirement from the Super Eagles, calling the decision an emotional moment for the team as they prepare for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.
Troost-Ekong confirmed his retirement even though he was included in Nigeria’s 54-man provisional squad for the tournament. The 32-year-old former captain, who made 83 appearances for the Super Eagles, stepped away from international football just weeks before the team begins its AFCON campaign.
Speaking to SportyTV’s Kelechi, Iwobi said the news was difficult for the players to accept, as Troost-Ekong played a big role both on and off the pitch.
“Obviously it is a sad one for us because he is a big part of our team. But at the end of the day, I wish him well. He is a brother and he has helped Nigeria and me,” Iwobi said.
“I just hope that the next chapter of his life goes well for him, and we will all support him.”
Iwobi admitted that Troost-Ekong had not been playing as often toward the end of his international career, but stressed that his leadership remained important.
“Of course, towards the end of his Nigerian career he wasn’t playing as much as he would like, but he was still a big part of our team. His voice, the way he led us, and how he made sure the team stayed together were all very strong,” he added.
The former Arsenal star also praised Troost-Ekong’s influence in the dressing room, describing him as a true leader whose presence will be missed.
“He will be very missed. He was a big leader for us, and I am sure we have other leaders who can follow in his footsteps, but we all wish him well,” Iwobi said.
Iwobi, now one of the senior players in the squad, also spoke about taking on more leadership responsibility as Nigeria heads into AFCON.
“God willing, if I stay fit, I will be there representing Nigeria at AFCON. We will be fine for Nigeria and for Wil as well. He will be there in spirit,” he assured.
Nigeria will play in Group C alongside Tunisia, Uganda, and Tanzania.
The Super Eagles will begin their campaign on 23 December against Tanzania, face Tunisia on 27 December, and conclude the group stage against Uganda on 30 December.
