Alex Iwobi Talks About His Football Journey and Proud Father
Fulham and Super Eagles midfielder, Alex Iwobi, has shared the story of how his football career began, revealing that his father is his biggest fan.
The 28-year-old, who started at Arsenal’s Hale End Football Academy, eventually made it into the first team. Iwobi also played for England at youth level before choosing to represent Nigeria, and since then, he has won both bronze and silver medals at different Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournaments.
Speaking about his early days in football, Iwobi explained that he was always full of energy as a child. “My parents said I could run before I started walking. They’d say I’d sit down, then in a split second, I’d sprint around the flat and they thought this baby is crazy,” Iwobi recalled on the Fulham Fix Podcast.
“I was very excited as a kid, running around, sliding tackling balloons, kicking chairs, just being an energetic and strange child,” he added.
Now a key player at Fulham, Iwobi’s father has always supported him. Even though it can sometimes be embarrassing, his dad is always wearing a training kit or one of Iwobi’s jerseys. “He’s always ready to go. Sometimes when we go out, he wears a shirt with ‘Iwobi’ on the back and I tell him to chill, but he’s just proud of me,” Iwobi said.
While his father doesn’t go into the details of his son’s football, he understands the game well, having played in Nigeria himself. “He just says ‘well done’. Sometimes he asks why I didn’t shoot when I had the chance, but that’s just being a dad,” Iwobi added.
This season, Iwobi has scored seven goals and provided three assists in 26 Premier League matches, helping Fulham reach 10th place in the league.
