Trent Alexander-Arnold came off the bench to score a late winning goal, helping Liverpool move just three points away from winning the Premier League title and sending Leicester City down to the Championship.
The right-back, who has not yet signed a new contract and has been linked with a free transfer to Real Madrid at the end of the season, scored 14 minutes from the end at the King Power Stadium. Liverpool had been struggling to break down the already-relegated Leicester side.
It was a perfect return for the 26-year-old, who had been out with an ankle injury since early March. He scored from a tight angle after chances from Mohamed Salah and Diogo Jota had hit the goalpost in a crowded goalmouth.
Alexander-Arnold showed how much the goal meant to him by taking off his shirt and celebrating wildly with the Liverpool fans. He even hung his shirt on the corner flag.
Arne Slot’s team can now look forward to a title celebration at Anfield next Sunday when they play Tottenham Hotspur – though they might be crowned champions earlier, depending on the result of Arsenal’s match against Crystal Palace on Wednesday.
Salah almost gave Liverpool the lead in the opening seconds, but his shot hit both posts. Leicester’s Wilfred Ndidi also struck the post early in the game.
Liverpool are now on the verge of becoming Premier League champions, while Leicester City will drop back down to the Championship after a poor season.
