Alexander Zverev bounces back to seal Laver Cup for Team Europe

Alexander Zverev bounced back from his disappointing defeat to Alex de Minaur to deliver the winning point for Team Europe at the Laver Cup on Sunday.

Zverev defeated Learner Tien 7-6(3), 6-3 at the O2 Arena in London, giving Europe a 13-5 victory over Team World and their sixth Laver Cup title.

The German had endured a frustrating Saturday after letting a match point slip before losing to de Minaur in a deciding match tiebreak. He returned to the court on Sunday knowing that a win would be enough to bring the trophy back to Europe.

Before Zverev’s match, Flavio Cobolli and Jakub Mensik had beaten Taylor Fritz and de Minaur 7-5, 6-3 in the opening doubles match, putting Europe 10-5 ahead.

That left Zverev with the chance to finish the job, and he took it in straight sets against Tien.

It was also a familiar role for the 29-year-old, who has now clinched the Laver Cup for Team Europe four times, previously doing so in 2018, 2019 and 2021.

Speaking after the victory, Zverev said winning alongside his teammates was a special feeling.
“Winning as a team…there’s no better feeling in sports. We don’t have enough of it in tennis,” he said

Team Europe had lost the trophy to Team World last year, but they have now reclaimed it in London.
