Alexandra Eala Beats Madison Keys to Reach Last 16 in Miami
Alexandra Eala defeated Madison Keys 6-4, 6-2 on Sunday to move into the fourth round of the Miami Open. She will now face Spain’s Paula Badosa, who is seeded No 10, in the next round.
The 19-year-old Filipino, who entered the tournament as a wildcard, made history with her win. Eala is the first Filipino woman in the Open era to beat a Grand Slam champion. She is also the first Filipino player, male or female, to achieve this since Eric Taino beat Michael Chang in 2003.
Eala, ranked No 140 in the world, stopped Keys’ winning run. The American, ranked No 5, had won her last 12 matches against players outside the world’s top 100.
Eala has also become the first Asian teenager to defeat a former Grand Slam champion, joining the ranks of Naomi Osaka and Zheng Qinwen.
Before beating Keys, Eala defeated American Katie Volynets 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) in the first round and Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko, the No 25 seed, 7-6 (7-2), 7-5 in the second round.
Keys had earlier beaten Armenian player Elina Avanesyan 6-3, 6-3 in her opening match at the tournament.
