Algeria Reverses CHAN 2024 Withdrawal, Opts to Field Senior National Team
The Algeria Football Federation (FAF) has overturned its earlier decision to withdraw from the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), confirming its participation in the tournament’s playoffs.
Initially, Algeria cited fixture congestion as the reason for its withdrawal. However, the North African nation has now committed to competing in the qualifiers, where they will face Comoros, Egypt, Gambia, Malawi, and South Africa for a place in the final tournament.
In a notable change, the FAF has also decided to field the senior national team instead of the U-23 squad originally planned for the competition. The national ‘A’ team, coached by Abdelmadjid Bougherra, will commence preparations during the FIFA international window from March 17 to 25, 2025.
This preparatory phase will not only gear the team up for CHAN 2025, scheduled for August 2–30, but also for the Arab Cup in December 2025. The exact dates for the CHAN playoffs are yet to be announced.
