Algeria suffer AFCON group stage exit after after historic win for Mauritania

Algeria suffered a shocking exit from the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) as they were defeated 1-0 by Mauritania in their last group stage match played on Tuesday, January 23, 2024.

Mohamed Dellahi’s first-half goal secured a historic victory for Mauritania, ensuring the stand a chance of progression to the knockout stages for the first time in AFCON history.

Despite Algeria having numerous chances to take the lead early in the game, including shots from Youcef Atal and Adam Ounas, they failed to find the back of the net. Houssem Aouar missed a crucial opportunity for Algeria, failing to hit the target from close range.

Mauritania grew into the match, and Mohamed Dellahi capitalized on a blocked shot, calmly hooking the ball into the net from 10 yards out to give his team the lead.

Despite Algeria’s efforts to equalize, including the introduction of Riyad Mahrez in the second half, they couldn’t break through Mauritania’s defense. The underdogs nearly extended their lead, with Aboubakar Kamara and Ibnou Ba having opportunities to score.

In the end, Mauritania secured a historic victory, marking their first-ever win against Algeria. The defeat means Algeria fails to qualify for the knockout stages for the second consecutive AFCON tournament.
