Algeria’s Amoura Issues Apology After Controversial Gesture at AFCON Match

Algeria forward Mohamed Amoura has publicly apologised following an incident involving a Congolese supporter during his country’s Africa Cup of Nations Round of 16 clash with the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The Wolfsburg attacker came under heavy criticism after being seen mocking a fan in the stands who appeared to be imitating Patrice Lumumba, the late Congolese independence leader. The moment occurred shortly after Algeria secured a narrow victory through Adel Boulbina’s lone goal, a result that booked the North Africans a quarter-final meeting with Nigeria.
Footage of the incident quickly spread online, drawing backlash from fans and commentators, who described Amoura’s behaviour as disrespectful.
Reacting to the controversy on Wednesday, Amoura released a statement on his Instagram page, expressing regret and insisting there was no ill intent behind his actions.
He explained that emotions were high during the tense encounter and claimed he was unaware of the historical significance of what the supporter represented. According to the forward, his gesture was meant as light-hearted banter and not an attempt to offend or provoke.
Amoura also stressed his respect for the Congolese people and their national team, wishing them success in future competitions, including World Cup qualification.
The Algerian international concluded by apologising to anyone who felt offended by the incident and said his focus remains on performing on the pitch and representing Algeria with pride as the tournament continues.
