Alozie, Onomunu beaten in NWSL opening week
Super Falcons stars Ifeoma Onumonu and Michelle Alozie faced defeats in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) as the competition resumed on Saturday, March 16, 2024, with Nigerian players back in action.
Onumonu made her debut for Utah Royals FC, but they suffered a 0-2 loss to Chicago Red Stars in their opening game of the season. The Red Stars secured victory with goals from Ally Schlegel and Ava Cook, supported by a strong performance from goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher.
Onumonu, who recently joined from Gotham FC, entered the game in the 88th minute and had little time to help her new team avoid defeat.
Meanwhile, Michelle Alozie featured for Houston Dash in their match against North Carolina Courage, but they were defeated 1-5.
Despite the support from Alozie, the Dash couldn’t secure a win as North Carolina Courage set a club record for a home opener with their impressive victory.
In another match, Super Falcons forward Uchenna Kanu scored for Racing Louisville as they played out a 2-2 draw with Orlando Pride.
The next fixtures for both teams will see Houston Dash making their debut at Shell Energy Stadium against Racing Louisville FC on March 23, while Utah Royals FC will host North Carolina Courage.
