Anthony Joshua Considering Retirement After Tragic Loss, Uncle Reveals
Former world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua is reportedly considering ending his boxing career following a tragic car accident in Nigeria that claimed the lives of two of his closest associates.
The incident occurred on 29 December 2025 along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, leaving the 36-year-old boxer emotionally devastated. The accident claimed the lives of Sina Ghami and Latif “Latz” Ayodele, both long-time members of Joshua’s team. Joshua shared a social media post in the aftermath, offering support to the families of the victims.
Speaking to Punch during a visit to the family’s home in Sagamu, Ogun State, Joshua’s uncle, Adedamola Joshua, revealed that the boxer has privately discussed retirement with his family. “The major thing there is that he has retired from boxing,” Adedamola said. He added, “That is one thing that makes us glad because each time he’s fighting in the ring, we are always carried away emotionally.”
Joshua attended an emotional Janaza (Islamic funeral prayer) for both men on Sunday at the London Central Mosque. The coffins were placed side by side as prayers were offered, with hundreds of mourners gathering outside the mosque. They were later taken to a nearby crematorium, followed by a wake held in their memory.
The boxer’s friends and fans have expressed sympathy for his loss, with Super Eagles captain also extending condolences, saying, “I hope he can recover from that.”
Anthony Joshua’s potential retirement marks a significant moment in boxing, coming after a career defined by world titles, intense rivalries, and unforgettable bouts. The decision, according to family members, comes as he prioritises his emotional well-being after the devastating incident.
