Anthony Martial finds new club after Manchester United exit
Set to Join AEK Athens in record-breaking deal
Former Manchester United forward Anthony Martial is reportedly on the verge of signing a lucrative three-year contract with Greek Super League club AEK Athens.
The 28-year-old French striker has been a free agent since his departure from Manchester United at the end of last season.
According to multiple sources, Martial has verbally agreed to a deal with AEK Athens worth £2.5 million per season, totalling £7.5 million over three years. This contract would mark the most financially significant agreement in the history of the Greek club.
Martial’s move to AEK Athens comes after negotiations with Brazilian club Flamengo fell through due to a disagreement over contract length. The striker reportedly insisted on a three-year deal, which Flamengo was unwilling to offer. Martial was also linked with clubs like Lille, Atalanta, Marseille, and Besiktas, but AEK Athens ultimately secured his signature.
If the deal goes through as expected, Martial will join a roster that already includes former Tottenham Hotspur star Erik Lamela, ex-Watford players Roberto Pereyra and Nordin Amrabat, and former Brentford goalkeeper Thomas Strakosha.
Martial’s agreement with AEK Athens follows the club’s unsuccessful attempt to bring in Chelsea’s David Datro Fofana on loan. The Greek side, which finished just two points behind the league champions last season, sees Martial’s signing as a major boost to their attacking options.
Despite taking a significant pay cut from his Manchester United salary, where he earned £250,000 per week, Martial is expected to play a pivotal role in AEK Athens’ push for domestic success.
The Frenchman will also have the opportunity to revive his career after a series of injuries and inconsistent form during his time at Old Trafford.
While AEK Athens missed out on European football this season, Martial’s arrival is expected to strengthen their squad as they compete for the Greek Super League title. The club is set to officially announce the transfer once all final details are completed.
This move marks a new chapter for Martial, who will look to make an impact in Greece after a mixed spell in the Premier League.
