Antony and Isco inspire Betis to shock victory over Real Madrid at the Villamarin
Real Betis defeated Real Madrid at the Benito Villamarin, giving their hopes of qualifying for Europe a boost and damaging Real Madrid’s title chances.
Real Madrid took an early lead through Brahim Diaz, and it looked like they were on their way to an easy win. However, Betis fought back, scoring once in each half to secure a memorable victory over the champions.
Key match details: Real Madrid started strong, scoring within 10 minutes. Ferland Mendy passed the ball to Kylian Mbappe, who then set up Brahim Diaz to score. Despite their early lead, Real Madrid’s dominance started to fade as Betis grew into the game.
Betis had their first real chance when Ricardo Rodriguez tried a long-range shot, followed by a miss from Marc Bartra and a failed header from Jesus Rodriguez after a cross from Youssouf Sabaly.
After struggling early on, Betis kept pushing and got their reward in the 34th minute. Johnny Cardoso met Isco’s perfect cross with a powerful header that beat Thibaut Courtois. Cardoso nearly scored again just before halftime, but Courtois made an amazing save to deny his header.
In the second half, Betis kept pressing. Cardoso and Cucho both had shots blocked, and they were awarded a penalty when Isco played a pass to Jesus, who was fouled by Antonio Rudiger. Isco took the penalty and scored, even though Courtois guessed the right way.
Real Madrid tried hard to equalise but Betis held strong. The win lifts Betis to sixth in the LaLiga standings, improving their chances of qualifying for the Europa League. Real Madrid, meanwhile, risks dropping to third by the end of the week.
