Argentina secures quarterfinal slot with win over Paraguay
Chile, Uruguay draw in other Group B match
Argentina claimed a 1-0 success against Paraguay in Brasilia in their third group B game at the 2021 Copa America to book their place in the quarterfinals of the tournament. Sevilla midfielder, Papu Gomez scored the game’s only goal after 10 minutes in a below-par performance by La Albiceleste. Argentina have now remained unbeaten for 16 matches, last losing to Brazil in the 2019 Copa America semifinal. It was also a milestone match for national team captain Lionel Messi, who equalled Javier Mascherano’s appearance record for the Argentina national team with his 147th appearance.
Chile and Uruguay faced off in another of the Group B fixtures in the 2021 Copa America, and their game ended 1-1, with both sides settling for a point apiece. Eduardo Vargas had given Chile the lead with his second goal of the tournament after 26 minutes, before Inter Milan midfielder Arturo Vidal put the ball through his own net after 66 minutes to earn Uruguay a point. The point was enough for Chile to book their place in the quarterfinals of the Copa America.
