Arsenal FC were 3-1 victors of Chelsea FC to reclaim top spot in the English Premier league on Tuesday May 2, 2023.
A domineering first half performance by the Gunners produced goals from captain Martin Odegaard (2) and Gabriel Jesus before Noni Madueke pulled one back for Chelsea who have lost six straight games.
After a period of sustained pressure, Granit Xhaka found Odegaard with a pass at the edge of the Chelsea’s box. The Arsenal captain hit a first time shot that hit the underside of the crossbar before gracing the net.
Chelsea defender Ben Chilwell then had his shot pushed away by Aaron Ramsdale in a rare Chelsea chance before Arsenal added a second.
Just like the first, Xhaka`s pass was smashed home by Odegaard in the Chelsea area for 2-0 at the Emirates Stadium.
It was derby delight for Arsenal fans when Gabriel Jesus scored the 3rd goal in the 34th minute following a scramble in the Chelsea box.
It was 3-0 at half-time, a deserving lead for Mikel Arteta`s men who pinned London rivals Chelsea to their own half for most parts of the first half.
Noni Madueke raced into the Arsenal box to squeeze a shot past Ramsdale for 3-1 in the 65th minute but there was no fight from the Blues who were kept busy by a dynamic Gunners attack on Tuesday night .
Arsenal controlled the remaining minutes of the game at the Emirates to see off a 3-1 victory and return to top spot in the Premier League.
The Gunners have garnered 78 points from 34 matches two more than second placed Manchester City (76) who have played two-games less .
At the moment, Arsenal will have to keep picking victories while hoping for a City slip in the race for the league title this season.
For Chelsea, it was another sorry performance for a team that has lost all six matches since the return of Englishman Frank Lampard as Interim manager.
