Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka talks about his Nigerian heritage

Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka recently opened up about his Nigerian heritage in an interview with the BBC. The 22-year-old football star, who was born in England to Nigerian parents, emphasised the importance of his dual nationality and his connection to his roots.

Bukayo Saka, a product of Arsenal’s Hale End academy, has always celebrated his Nigerian culture and even visited Lagos last summer.

Speaking on BBC Five’s Football Daily Show, he reflected on the significance of his background. “It means a lot to me. Obviously, growing up with Nigerian parents but living in this country, both sides mean a lot to me,” Saka said.

When asked about the meaning of his Yoruba name, Saka explained, “It means added joy.” He expressed pride in his name, noting, “I like my name. If I remember correctly, I think my grandma gave it to me. I have to double-check with my parents, but I think I’m right.”
