Arteta satisfied with Arsenal draw at Anfield
Arsenal manager, Mikel Arteta, expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance in a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Liverpool at Anfield, describing the game as having a few ‘washing machine’ moments.
Arteta, in a more jovial mood compared to previous weeks, commended his players for standing up to the test in the intense atmosphere at Anfield, a venue where Arsenal has struggled historically.
The Gunners’ central defenders, William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes, played a crucial role in securing the draw, ensuring that Arsenal remains at the top of the Premier League table.
Arteta acknowledged the significance of facing a team like Liverpool at Anfield and praised his players for their resilience, emphasizing their ability to play with intensity in any stadium.
In a post-match interview with Sky Sports, Arteta said, “An unbelievable game of football, one of the most intense I’ve witnessed in 20 years in this league. For many moments we were on top, in the last 20 minutes we wanted it more, but a draw is a fair result.”
” To do that today shows that we can go to any ground and play that way. I think there were ‘washing machine’ moments for both teams.
” We missed some big players when we came here last year, crucial elements that you need to have to be able to play this way against them. We had that today.”
He highlighted the team’s capability to go head-to-head with a formidable opponent and mentioned the missed chances and penalty shouts during the game.
Despite the draw, Arteta deemed it a fair result in a highly competitive encounter.
Arsenal’s draw with Liverpool maintains their position at the top of the Premier League table, a notable achievement considering the challenging atmosphere at Anfield.
However, Arteta acknowledged that Manchester City, fresh from their Club World Cup victory, is a strong contender, and the title race remains highly competitive.
Arteta also mentioned that the draw was positive for Arsenal, as historically, the team leading the league at Christmas has gone on to win the title in many seasons.
Arsenal will be looking to build on this performance and maintain their momentum as the season progresses.
Last year, the Gunners led the English Premier League standings on christmas day but stumbled in the final weeks of the season to allow City steal the title.
