Asisat Oshoala set to leave Barcelona for new adventure
Super Falcons star Asisat Oshoala is reportedly set to leave Barcelona, ending her successful time with the reigning Spanish champions.
Oshoala joined Barcelona in January 2019 initially on loan from Chinese club Dalian Quanjian before securing a permanent deal in June of the same year.
During her time with Barcelona, Oshoala achieved significant success, contributing to the club’s four Primera División titles, three Supercopa de España Femenina honors, and three Copa de la Reina titles.
She made history as the first African to win the UEFA Women’s Champions League with Barcelona in 2021, repeating the feat in the 2023 edition.
Oshoala’s contract with Barcelona is set to expire in June, but reports suggest that the club has approved her departure this month. Her exclusion from recent squad decisions further signals the end of her contract with the club.
Speculation is high that Oshoala will begin a new adventure in the United State National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) where Bay FC is heavily tipped as her destination.
The potential transfer for the Africa Women’s Footballer of the year could command a fee of approximately €150,000 ($162,000). Oshoala has been spotted in the United States, heightening anticipation of the move.
An official announcement is expected later this week, with Oshoala reportedly agreeing to a contract that runs through to 2026, including a 2027 option.
Bay FC, set to debut in the NWSL’s 2024 season, will play their home games at PayPal Park in San Jose, California, and kick off their inaugural NWSL campaign against Angel City on March 17.
In the current season with FC Barcelona, Oshoala has made 14 appearances, starting in three games and scoring eight goals. Over her five-year stint with the Spanish giants, the former Arsenal star scored 107 goals in 149 appearances.
