Asisat Oshoala shares expectations for upcoming Women’s AFCON
As the 2024 Women’s African Cup of Nations (WAFCON) draws near, Bay FC striker Asisat Oshoala has spoken about her hopes for the tournament and the future of the Super Falcons.
Oshoala, a key figure for Nigeria, is expected to play a leading role as the team aims to secure their 12th continental title.
Speaking during an X Space event hosted by Kenneth Omeruo, Oshoala shared her commitment to continuous improvement, particularly as she looks ahead to 2025.
“As always, we have to focus on 2025 and take another chance to get back to winning ways, bringing home trophies like we used to,” she said.
Reflecting on recent challenges, including the team’s performance at the Olympics, Oshoala acknowledged the need for progress.
“Although we didn’t make it past the group stage at the Olympics, we faced tough competition and showed our quality,” she explained.
Oshoala highlighted the emergence of young talent from the local league and the growing cohesion among foreign-based players as key factors in the team’s development.
“We have a lot of young talent coming through, and our foreign-based players are learning to play together more effectively,” she noted.
Looking ahead, Oshoala expressed confidence in the Super Falcons’ prospects for the future.
“2025 will be a better year. The mentality has changed; everyone is eager to win, and there’s healthy competition for places. There are no automatic spots anymore,” she said.
“We’ve had strong performances recently, and if we keep this momentum, WAFCON will be a great tournament for us.”
The next WAFCON will take place in Morocco from 5th to 26th July 2025.
