Auckland FC Players to honour women on International Women’s Day

Auckland FC will mark International Women’s Day on 8th March with a special tribute during their match against Perth Glory FC.

Before kick-off, Auckland FC players will wear warm-up jerseys featuring the names of influential women in their lives. The initiative recognises mothers, daughters, wives and partners who have played important roles in supporting the players both on and off the pitch.

The gesture is part of the club’s effort to celebrate the impact of women and girls in football and across communities in New Zealand.

Each warm-up shirt will also carry the number 50, symbolising the 50 years ban that once prevented women and girls from playing football in New Zealand. The tribute serves as a reminder of how far the sport has come and the work that remains to ensure equal opportunities.

The match also highlights The Next 50, a new initiative launched by Auckland FC in partnership with New Balance. The program is designed to support young girls aged 10 to 14, an age group where participation in football often drops.

Each year, 50 young players will receive support that includes football equipment worth $500, access to Auckland FC football camps and ongoing training and development opportunities.

Fans attending the match will also see the young players celebrated before kick-off in a special video presentation. The girls selected for the program will serve as the official honour guard for the fixture, while all ball kids for the match will also be girls.

Merchandise celebrating women and girls in football will also be available at the stadium, with special pop-up stands selling dedicated items for fans.

Through these initiatives, Auckland FC hopes to shine a spotlight on the role women have played in shaping football in New Zealand and inspire the next generation to stay connected to the game.
