Awaziem Sets Sights on Winning 2025 AFCON With Super Eagles

Super Eagles defender Chidozie Awaziem says his main goal now is to help Nigeria win the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

The tournament will begin on 21 December in Morocco, and Nigeria will be aiming to lift their fourth AFCON trophy. The team goes into the competition under pressure after failing to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, even after being given another chance through the playoffs.

A provisional 55-man squad was released on Tuesday. Usual names were included, along with some newcomers. Awaziem, who has earned 35 caps since his debut in 2017, is one of the regulars expected to make the final team. The 28-year-old has been in strong form this season, playing in every match he was available for at Nantes.

In a recent interview on his club’s website, Awaziem said his focus is firmly on helping Nigeria win the title. He added that the team must correct the mistake of missing out on the World Cup.

Nigeria last won the AFCON in 2013. Although the squad includes several players from top European clubs, the team has struggled for consistency. They finished as runners-up in the 2023 tournament but have not shown the same level of performance since.

Morocco, the hosts, are seen as strong favourites. Other teams like DR Congo, Ivory Coast and Cameroon are also expected to challenge.

Confidence in the Super Eagles is currently low, but Awaziem hopes things will come together when the tournament begins.

The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations will run from 21 December to 18 January 2026.
