Awoniyi dagger hands Forest stunning win against Liverpool
Super Eagles star scores against former club to lead Reds to win
Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi made the difference in the battle of the Reds as his side claimed a 1-0 win over Liverpool to pick up an important win in the Premier League. The newly-promoted side moved off the bottom of the table with the win.
The Reds came into the game on the back of successive 1-0 wins against Manchester City and West Ham United and were looking to continue their good form.
Liverpool dominated the first half of the proceedings and should have gone ahead as Virgil Van Dijk wasted a free header which he should have scored on his own. The visitors would come to rue the missed opportunity within ten minutes of the second half.
A deep cross from Morgan Gibbs-White was sent wide for Steve Cook, who sent a low cross into the box for Awoniyi, who crashed a first-time effort against the woodwork before reacting quickest to fire home the rebound from close range. It was the Super Eagles forward’s the third goal of the season and made him the first player in the club’s history to score in each of his first three home starts in the Premier League.

Awoniyi goal against Liverpool
Nottingham Forest continued to cause their illustrious visitors problems, with Alisson called into action by substitute Sam Surridge with ten minutes of the game left. They had their own goalkeeper Dean Henderson to thank for the win as he made two stunning saves to deny Virgil Van Dijk and Mohamed Salah in the closing stages.
Nottingham Forest have now claimed the first win in nine matches to move off the foot of the table. They will be hoping that this win will propel them to more improved performances this season in the Premier League.
Awoniyi scored on his first appearance against Liverpool, the club that first brought him to Europe before selling him to Union Berlin for £6.5 million in the summer of 2021.
