Balogun’s Red Card Casts Shadow Over USA’s World Cup Victory

Folarin Balogun’s red card overshadowed the United States’ impressive 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina as Mauricio Pochettino’s side booked their place in the last 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The USA produced another strong performance in front of their home fans at the San Francisco Bay Area Stadium and will now face Belgium in the next round. However, the victory came at a significant cost after Balogun was sent off in the second half.
The 24-year-old striker, who began the tournament with a brace against Paraguay, scored his third goal of the World Cup shortly before half-time to give the Americans the lead. Balogun was in excellent form throughout the match and could have scored a hat-trick after missing a couple of good chances and having one goal ruled out for offside.
However, his night took a dramatic turn just after the hour mark.
While challenging Bosnia defender Tarik Muharemovic for a loose ball, Balogun accidentally stepped on the defender’s ankle. Brazilian referee Raphael Claus initially allowed play to continue but later reviewed the incident on the pitch-side monitor before showing the American striker a straight red card.
Although the challenge appeared accidental, the decision means Balogun will automatically miss the USA’s last-16 clash against Belgium. FIFA officials could also decide to extend his suspension, which would be a major blow to the Americans’ hopes of winning the World Cup on home soil.
Balogun’s dismissal also saw him enter the history books for an unwanted reason. After becoming only the third American player to score three goals in a single World Cup tournament, he also became just the fourth player to score and receive a red card in a World Cup knockout match.
With Balogun unavailable, Ricardo Pepi is expected to lead the USA attack against Belgium. However, the PSV forward is yet to score in this tournament and has struggled to find form in recent international matches.
Despite the setback, the USA squad has rallied around Balogun.
“We told him we have got his back,” defender Chris Richards said after the match. “We are a team of 26, not just one. We will miss him, but whoever steps in will do their job.”
Head coach Mauricio Pochettino also praised his players’ reaction to the red card.
“When Balogun received the red card, I saw the players ready to fight for each other,” he said. “These players are creating a legacy in this country. With our fans behind us, everything is possible. Why not us?”
The United States have already exceeded many expectations at this World Cup, but as they prepare for a difficult last-16 clash against Belgium, one question remains: will Balogun’s red card prove to be the turning point in their dream of lifting the trophy on home soil?
