‘Baseless’ – Mikel Obi defends Jose Mourinho against racism allegations
Former Chelsea midfielder John Mikel Obi has strongly defended José Mourinho against accusations of racism, calling the claims “a joke” and “baseless.”
Speaking on his Obi One Podcast on Wednesday, Mikel, who played under Mourinho at Chelsea, rejected the allegations and insisted that Mourinho is not a racist.
“For them to label our African dad (Jose Mourinho) a racist, for me, that’s a joke. That’s a joke,” Mikel said in a video statement.
He went on to describe Mourinho as someone who treats everyone equally, questioning the motive behind the accusations.
“This is politics in football in Turkey. Jose Mourinho is somebody who loves everybody. A beautiful, beautiful human being. The straightest, most straightforward person you can ever meet in your life. He says it as it is.”
Mikel also added that Mourinho had treated him, Didier Drogba, and Michael Essien like his own children.
“Didier Drogba, Michael Essien. He loved us as his own children. So for me, this comment, this situation, I don’t even want to get into it because it’s baseless,” he said.
Mikel’s comments come amid continued reactions to the controversy surrounding Mourinho’s alleged remarks, particularly from Turkish football fans.
