Bassey Criticised for Defensive Error in Fulham’s FA Cup Defeat
Fulham defender Calvin Bassey has come under criticism from sports reporter Gail Davis for his role in Crystal Palace’s second goal during their 3-0 FA Cup quarter-final defeat.
Bassey’s Defensive Lapse
Bassey, who has been one of Fulham’s top performers this season, was caught out at the near post as Ismaïla Sarr scored from Eberechi Eze’s cross in the 38th minute.
Before that, Eze had opened the scoring in the 34th minute, and Eddie Nketiah later sealed the win in the second half.
Speaking on Sky Sports, Davis criticised Bassey’s defending, describing Fulham’s second goal as happening in “slow motion.”
“Eze put in a lovely cross, but Bassey should have done better. He allowed Sarr to score far too easily with a simple header.”
She also pointed out that Fulham had started well, making their 2-0 deficit hard to believe after such a strong first 30 minutes.
Bassey’s Strong Season Despite Defeat
Despite this setback, Bassey has been outstanding for Fulham this season. The Nigerian international, making only his second FA Cup appearance for the club, has played 30 matches across all competitions.
He has also contributed two goals, scoring against Nottingham Forest in the Premier League and Manchester United in the FA Cup at Old Trafford.
