Bassey to get new manager as Ajax fire Schreuder

Dutch champions relieve manager of duties following run of poor form

Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey will join the likes of Alex Iwobi and William Troost-Ekong in getting a new coach mid-season after Ajax decided to part ways with manager Alfred Schreuder. The Dutchman failed to last long at the helm of affairs at the Johan Cruyff Arena, spending barely half a season in charge.

Schreuder was appointed as Ajax manager in June 2022 after a stint in charge of Club Brugge. He was appointed as the replacement for the Manchester United-bound Erik ten Hag after impressing in the Belgian Pro League. One of Schreuder’s first signings as Ajax manager was Nigerian left-back Bassey.

The club hierarchy at Ajax decided to fire the manager after his side have underwhelmed this season so far. The club are in fifth place and are seven points off the pace in the Eredivisie this season. They were also sent crashing out of the UEFA Champions League at the group stage. The draw against relegation-threatened FC Volendam at home today proved to be the final straw on the camel’s back.

Schreuder made Bassey a mainstay in his team, with the young defender featuring 24 times already for the club this season. Ajax will now look to appoint a new manager to get their season back on track after a run of seven league matches without a win.
