Bendel Insurance’s Amas Obasogie delighted with Super Eagles call-up
Bendel Insurance goalkeeper Amas Obasogie has expressed his immense joy after receiving a call-up to the Nigeria national team under the newly appointed Super Eagles head coach, Bruno Labbadia. This marks Obasogie’s second invitation to the national team, following his initial call-up last November.
Despite being included in the squad for the FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and Zimbabwe last year—both of which ended in 1-1 draws—Obasogie did not make his debut. Now, the 24-year-old shot-stopper is hopeful that his latest opportunity with the Super Eagles will lead to his first cap for the national team.
Obasogie took to Twitter to share his excitement about the call-up, attributing his success to the prayers of his late mother. He tweeted, “The son of a praying mother, even in death, the prayers still day flow. Congratulations go reach everybody.”
Obasogie has firmly established himself as one of the top goalkeepers in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL). His exceptional performances throughout the 2023/24 season earned him the prestigious Golden Glove award, having kept an impressive 18 clean sheets—the most in the league.
This achievement not only secured the award for Obasogie but also set a new record for the most clean sheets in a single NPFL season, surpassing the previous record of 16 clean sheets held by Kwara United’s Adewale Adeyinka during the 2020/21 season.
