Benin Claim First-Ever AFCON Win with Narrow Victory Over Botswana

Benin Republic recorded their first-ever Africa Cup of Nations victory after former Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr led them to a 1-0 win over Botswana in Rabat on Saturday.
The winning goal came in the 28th minute. Defender Yohan Roche played a quick one-two with striker Steve Mounie before lifting the ball over Botswana goalkeeper Goitseone Phoko.
It was Benin’s first victory in normal time after five AFCON appearances and 16 matches.
Botswana almost equalised soon after when Mothusi Johnson’s well-struck free-kick hit the crossbar. Phoko also made two good saves in the second half to prevent Benin from increasing their lead.
Rohr was able to bring back several key players who missed the opening defeat to DR Congo due to injuries and suspensions. They included captain and top scorer Steve Mounie, goalkeeper Marcel Dandjinou, defender Mohamed Tijani and winger Junior Olaitan.
Botswana coach Morena Ramoreboli introduced 19-year-old forward Losika Ratshukudu, but his team found it difficult to create clear chances.
Both teams will play their final Group D matches on Tuesday. Benin will face Senegal in Tangier, while Botswana will take on DR Congo in Rabat. A third-place finish could be enough to reach the knockout stage.
Benin will hope their first points in Morocco can lead to further progress, just like in 2019 when three draws were enough to reach the last 16.
