Berger seals Presidents Cup victory for dominant USA
Rookie Daniel Berger sealed a seventh consecutive Presidents Cup triumph for the United States as the International team faced the prospect of a crushing defeat at Liberty National Golf Club.
The defending champions only needed a point to retain the trophy after starting the final day with a huge 14.5 – 3.5 advantage in New Jersey.
Kevin Chappell missed a putt to seal it for the USA at 18 and had to settle for half a point when Marc Leishman sunk a putt for par to ensure the first match was halved.
Berger was the man to finish off the job when he went three up on Kim Si-woo with three to play in the fourth match on Sunday.
The 24-year-old went on to win 2 and 1, giving the USA a 16-6 lead after Jason Day and Hideki Matsuyama had beaten Charley Hoffman and FedEx Cup champion Justin Thomas.
Day defeated Hoffman 2 and 1 and Matsuyama put on a show to get the better of Thomas 3 and 1, but the damage had been done as the International team’s 19-year wait for a second victory in the biennial event goes on.
Eight matches were still to be completed when Berger wrapped up his victory.
