Beyond Limits defeat GIF Sundsvall on penalties to reach quarterfinals
Kparobo continues fine goalscoring form
Beyond Limits FA booked their passage into the quarterfinals of the 2023 Gothia Cup after securing a 3-1 win over Swedish side GIF Sundsvall on penalties as their match ended 1-1 in regulation time.
Having finished second in the group after losing on penalties to BK Hacken in their final group game, the boys from Ikenne were up against another Swedish side, one that had won only one game in regulation time in the group phase.
Sundsvall took the lead in the opening minutes of the match through Ville Normelli as they looked to shock the Beyond Limits boys.
The Nigerian side kept its composure and continued to create openings as they looked for an equaliser. Their equaliser finally came in the second half from the boot of none other than Kparobo Arierhi, who notched his third goal in four games in the tournament.
As neither side managed to find a winner, the match went into a penalty shootout. Beyond Limits scored their first three penalties through Sunday Ogbonnaya, Arierhi, and Ogunniyi Oluseyi. Their goalkeeper Christian Okoroafor was the hero of the shootout as he saved two spot kicks to hand his side a 3-1 win.
Beyond Limits will face another Swedish side, AIK FF, in the quarterfinals later today for a place in the semifinals of the 2023 Gothia Cup.
