English Premier League’s bottom-placed team, Sheffield United defeated second-placed Manchester United 2-1 at Old Trafford in their Matchday 20 fixture. It was the Blades’ first away win at Manchester United in 48 years.
Manchester United came into the game knowing that a win would take them back to the top of the table above city rivals, Manchester City. It was however Sheffield United that took the lead, defender Kean Bryan scoring his first ever Premier League goal for the Blades from a corner. It was not until the second half that Manchester United finally got an equaliser as captain, Harry Maguire planted a firm header past Aaron Ramsdale in the Sheffield goal from an Alex Telles corner kick. However, in the 74th minute, a stroke of good fortune helped Sheffield take the lead again when substitute, Oliver Burke struck a shot which deflected off Manchester United defender, Axel Tuanzebe and beat David De Gea in goal to make it 2-1 to the visitors. It was also Burke’s first ever Premier League goal. The Blades defended resolutely, repelling wave after wave of Manchester United attacks until the final whistle was blown.
It was Sheffield United’s first away win this season, having picked up only one point from their travels before today. The result also ended Manchester United’s 13 game unbeaten run in what was their 4th home defeat of the season already. Manchester United remain in second place on the table, one point behind table-topping Manchester City who have an outstanding fixture to be played.
