Bompastor gives Girma Injury update after Cup Win
Sonia Bompastor praised her squad’s mentality after Chelsea F.C. Women lifted the FA Women’s League Cup, while also providing updates on injured defenders Naomi Girma and Millie Bright.
Chelsea secured the trophy with a 2–0 victory over Manchester United Women, thanks to goals from Lauren James and Aggie Beever-Jones.
However, both Girma and Bright missed the final through injury. Bompastor confirmed that Girma is dealing with a calf issue.
“I think Naomi Girma picked up a small injury in her calf,” Bompastor said. “It’s crucial at this time of the year to have all the players available.”
She also revealed that Bright will not be available for Chelsea’s upcoming match against Brighton & Hove Albion Women, although a return later in the week is possible.
“No timeline yet for Millie Bright. Not for Wednesday, but maybe the weekend.”
Despite the injuries, Bompastor highlighted the squad’s depth and determination in securing another trophy.
“The emotions are really high. It’s always difficult to play in a final and win,” she said.
“Sometimes people think because we are Chelsea it’s just a habit, but it takes a lot for the players to perform and grab a trophy. I’m really proud of them.”
The manager also reflected on how the team continues to overcome challenges throughout the season.
“We’ve had some big injuries to really important players, but it just shows the quality we have in the squad.”
After the victory, Bompastor said she planned to celebrate the moment with her family before quickly shifting focus to the next match.
“My kids are here. The next step is to celebrate with them and the team. It’s important to create these memories.”
