Breakdown: How Barcelona saved more than £20m (in wages, add-ons to Liverpool) by sending Coutinho to Bayern
Spanish giants Barcelona have pulled a stunning move on Liverpool after sending Brazilian attacker Philippe Coutinho to Bayern Munich on a season long loan deal.
Barcelona signed the 27-year-old attacker from Barcelona in a well celebrated deal in the January of 2018 for a fee of £142m but only paid £106m upront and £36m to be paid as add-on fees.
Here is the breakdown of how the £36m add-ons was expected to be paid to Liverpool;
—— £4.5m to be paid at each 25-match interval (£18m for 100 appearances in total
—— £4.5m due if Barca qualify for 2018/19 Champions League
——- £4.5m if they qualify for the 19/20 Champions League
——- A further £4.5m for winning the Champions League in 18/19
——- And £4.5m again if they win it in 19/20
So far, a total of £22.5m has been paid as add-ons and Barcelona are not likely to pay the remaining £13.5m because Coutinho who has made 75 appearances for Barcelona before his loan move may not add to that tally should Bayern sign him permanently.
Also, the monies for winning champions league in 18/19 and 19/20 seasons are out of the add ons.
Barcelona have also avoided paying his wage around £7.8m annually which Bayern have agreed to pay for the 2019/20 season taking the total saved by Barca to £21.3m.
Barcelona will recoup a staggering £110m as the deal which took the Brazilian to the German champions gave Bayern the option to buy for the amount.
Philippe Coutinho won the league title twice (2018 and 2019), the Copa del Rey (2018) and the Spanish Super Cup (2018) since joining Barcelona in January 2018.
Even if Bayern refuse to sign Philippe Coutinho at the end of the season Barcelona would have saved £9m but would have to pay £4.5m should the Brazilian play another 25 games for the Catalan giants.
