Brentford FC defeated Swansea City 2-0 at Wembley Stadium to qualify for the 2021/22 English Premier League as winners of the Championship playoff, reaching the English top-flight for the first time in 74 years.
Having won their semifinals against Bournemouth and Barnsley, Brentford and Swansea squared up at Wembley for the final Premier League slot, and it was Brentford who flew out of the blocks with goals from Ivan Toney and Emiliano Marcondes from their first two shots in the game within the opening 20 minutes eventually turning out to be enough to secure their place in the Premier League just a season after they lost the playoff final to Fulham.
Brentford’s victory in the playoff final guarantees them a reported £160 million in revenue and ensures that they return to the big stage for the first time since the 1946/47 season. The London side have ended a run of 10 successive playoff heartbreaks by finally picking up a Premier League ticket deservedly, making them the 50th team to appear in the Premier League since its reformation in 1992.
