Manchester United skipper Bruno Fernandes says his side started too late in the draw vs Everton on Saturday, February 22, 2025.
Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim was left searching for words after another disappointing performance from his team, as they drew 2-2 with Everton at Goodison Park.
The Red Devils were 2-0 down at half-time after a poor first 45 minutes, but Bruno Fernandes and Manuel Ugarte scored in the second half to rescue a point for United.
Despite a lacklustre and disjointed performance for much of the match, Fernandes’ goal gave United hope. However, speaking after the game, Fernandes admitted the team’s slow start cost them.
Asked by TNT Sports whether United felt lucky to escape with a draw after Everton’s late penalty was overturned, Fernandes said: “We didn’t feel like we got away with it. We were upset with how we started the game.”
“We had our chances in the second half, but the problem is we started too late. We gave it away in the first half. We were too static, and it was difficult to create any situations. We need to start the games better.”
He added, “We spoke at half-time. Every time we concede a goal, we go down and then we start playing. We need to start the game like that – taking risks and passing forward.”
“We are in a situation where we need to win games and score goals.”
Fernandes’ words reflected United’s ongoing struggles under Amorim, who has seen his team slump in recent weeks. Despite a dramatic comeback, it’s clear that United need to improve their performances from the very start of matches if they are to avoid more disappointing results.
