Bukayo Saka Says His Nigerian Roots Still Shape His Life and Career

Arsenal forward Bukayo Saka has spoken again about how important his Nigerian heritage is to him, saying his upbringing taught him values that still guide him today.
The 24-year-old discussed his family background in a recent BBC interview, as reported by All Nigeria Soccer.
Although Saka was born and raised in England, he grew up in a home filled with Nigerian traditions. His parents spent their early years in Nigeria before moving to the UK, and Saka says they played a huge part in shaping his character.
He said:
“My name is Bukayo Moses Ayoyinka Temidayo Saka. I am very proud of it. Both my parents grew up in Nigeria, so many of their values have been instilled in me.”
While Saka could have chosen to play international football for Nigeria, he committed to England after coming through their youth system. Even so, he continues to stay closely connected to his family’s homeland through charity work and community projects.
Before the 2022 World Cup, Saka partnered with the children’s charity BigShoe to help families in Kano. He paid for operations for 120 children suffering from conditions such as hernias and brain tumours, showing his dedication to supporting health projects in Nigeria.
His strong links to the country were also recognised in June 2023, when Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu welcomed him to the State House and praised him for his achievements and his continued connection to Nigeria.
