CAF Champions League: Rangers to approach Sagrada Esperança clash as a cup final
Rangers International FC Technical Adviser, Fidelis Ilechukwu, has emphasised the importance of treating their upcoming CAF Champions League clash against Sagrada Esperança of Angola like a cup final. The first-leg encounter of the second preliminary round for the 2024/2025 season is set to take place at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo, with a coveted group stage ticket on the line.
Ilechukwu, fresh off his national assignment with the Super Eagles during their AFCON 2025 qualifiers, is confident in his team’s readiness. “We are fully prepared to give our best against a quality team from Angola,” Ilechukwu told reporters. “Our focus is on getting the win that will make our progress in the competition smooth.”
The Rangers coach noted that despite challenges since their Nigeria Premier League opener, he remains optimistic. “We shall approach the match like a cup final and trust God for His favour,” Ilechukwu added.
Rangers advanced to this stage after defeating Comoros champions U.S Zilimadjou 2-1 on aggregate. However, their Angolan opponents, Sagrada Esperança, have proven formidable, sweeping aside their Seychelles counterpart 4-0 on aggregate in the previous round. As the third-best team in Angolan football, Sagrada presents a tough challenge for the Nigerian champions.
With the home advantage and the stakes high, Rangers will be looking to make a strong impression as they seek to secure their place in the CAF Champions League group stage.
