CAF Confederation Cup: Enyimba drawn in tough group D

Nigeria’s only representative in the 2024/25 CAF Confederation Cup, Enyimba, has been placed in Group D for the group stage of the competition.

The draw, which took place on Monday, sees the two-time CAF Champions League winners grouped with Egyptian clubs Al Masry and Zamalek, as well as Mozambique’s Black Bulls.

How Enyimba Reached the Group Stage

Enyimba received a bye in the first round of the competition before facing Burkina Faso’s Etoile Filante. Both legs of the encounter ended 0-0, forcing a penalty shootout. Enyimba came out victorious, winning 4-3 on penalties to secure their place in the group stage.

Coach’s Reaction

Enyimba’s head coach, Olanrewaju Daniel, expressed optimism about his team’s chances. “We are excited about the draw and will approach each game with determination. We know every team in the group stage is strong, so we will not underestimate anyone,” Daniel said per Afriksport.

Opponents in Group D

  • Zamalek (Egypt): One of Africa’s most successful teams, Zamalek has multiple continental titles, including the CAF Confederation Cup in 2018/19 and 2023/24.
  • Al Masry (Egypt): Though they haven’t won the CAF Confederation Cup, Al Masry reached the quarter-finals in the 2021/22 edition.
  • Black Bulls (Mozambique): Seen as underdogs, the Black Bulls advanced to the group stage by defeating Congo’s Otoho on away goals.

The group stage of the CAF Confederation Cup will kick off in November 2024, with fixtures running through April 2025. Match dates will be announced soon.
