CAF Confirms Senegal as AFCON 2025 Champions, Imposes Heavy Sanctions

The CAF Disciplinary Board has rejected Morocco’s protest seeking to have Senegal stripped of the AFCON 2025 title, confirming Senegal as the rightful champions of the tournament.

In its decisions on incidents from the final, CAF also announced a number of fines and suspensions against both football federations.

Sanctions on Senegal Football Federation (FSF)

CAF fined the Senegal Football Federation a total of $615,000. This includes $300,000 for improper conduct by supporters, $300,000 for unsporting behaviour by players and officials which brought the game into disrepute, and $15,000 for misconduct linked to the five yellow cards received in the final.

Senegal head coach Pape Thiaw was suspended for five official CAF matches and fined $100,000 for bringing the game into disrepute.

Players Iliman Ndiaye and Ismaila Sarr were each suspended for two official CAF matches for unsporting behaviour towards the referee.

Sanctions on Morocco Football Federation (FRMF)

The Morocco Football Federation was fined a total of $315,000. CAF imposed a $200,000 fine for inappropriate behaviour by stadium ball boys, $100,000 for improper conduct by players and officials who invaded the referee review area, and $15,000 for the use of lasers by fans.

Morocco captain Achraf Hakimi was suspended for two official CAF matches, with one of the suspensions suspended for one year.

Midfielder Ismael Saibari received a three-match CAF suspension for unsporting behaviour and was also fined $100,000.

CAF said the decisions were taken to protect the integrity of the game and ensure discipline at major competitions.
