Caleb Okoli Expresses Regret Over Not Debuting for Italy Amid National Team Call-ups

Leicester City defender Caleb Okoli has expressed his disappointment over not making a cap-tying appearance for Italy, despite being called up multiple times for the Azzurri’s UEFA Nations League matches in 2024.

The 23-year-old, who joined Leicester permanently from Atalanta last summer, has been in strong form for the Foxes, earning regular invitations to the Italian national team. Coach Luciano Spalletti called him up for the Nations League matches in September, October, and November, but Okoli has yet to make his debut for Italy, meaning he remains eligible to represent Nigeria, his country of origin.

In an interview with cronachedispogliatoio.it, Okoli shared his regret about not playing during these call-ups. “I have experienced some beautiful gatherings and the only regret I have is that I was not able to debut,” he said. “However, I believe that being able to be part of this journey is also important and I am sure that in the future I will be able to debut.”

Reflecting on his experience with the national team, Okoli also discussed the mental growth he’s gained from his interactions with Spalletti. He recalled early conversations with the coach, dating back to his time at Frosinone, where Spalletti provided valuable technical advice and spoke about the responsibilities of being a professional footballer.

“The coach had already come to talk to me when I was in Frosinone, last year,” Okoli explained. “He explained some things to me about being a footballer and made me understand the responsibilities we have. He also gave me technical advice. It was truly a pleasure to be able to have that chat.”

While Okoli has represented Italy at U19, U20, and U21 levels, he still has the option to play for Nigeria through his parents. His future national team choice remains uncertain, but for now, he is focused on his performances with Leicester City and hopes for a debut on the international stage soon.j
