Cameroonian Defender Backs Ademola Lookman for African Player of the Year
Ademola Lookman has been tipped as the favourite to win the CAF Men’s Player of the Year Award, with support coming from Cameroon international Flavien Enzo Boyomo.
The defender believes Lookman’s outstanding achievements over the past year make him the top contender for the prestigious prize.
Speaking to ESPN Africa, Boyomo, who plays for Osasuna in La Liga, praised Lookman for his key role in Atalanta’s success. “I’ll say Lookman. Because he won the Europa League, so I think he’s the one that’s got the best chance to win it this year,” said Boyomo.
Why Lookman is Leading the Race
Lookman has had an exceptional year. The former Fulham player led Nigeria’s Super Eagles to a silver medal at the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), scoring three goals—the highest in the team.
However, his standout moment came during the Europa League final, where he scored a hat-trick to help Atalanta secure their first-ever European trophy, defeating Bayer Leverkusen.
Lookman’s performances also earned him a spot in the 2024 Ballon d’Or rankings, finishing 14th as the only African among the top 30. His achievements have made him the front-runner for the CAF award, following in the footsteps of Victor Osimhen, who won last year.
As the CAF Awards draw closer, many fans and players alike see Lookman as the deserving winner of African Player of the Year.
