Carlos Alcaraz Reaches Monte-Carlo Masters Quarter-Finals for the First Time
Carlos Alcaraz made it into the quarter-finals of the Monte-Carlo Masters for the first time on Thursday after a comfortable win over Daniel Altmaier.
The 21-year-old Spaniard, who has already won four Grand Slam titles, beat the German 6-3, 6-1 in straight sets. Altmaier, ranked 84th in the world, couldn’t keep up with Alcaraz once the second seed found his rhythm.
The first set was level at 3-3 after Altmaier broke back, but from that point on, it was all Alcaraz. He won the next three games to take the set, and then breezed through the second set in just over 30 minutes.
Alcaraz, who currently holds the French Open and Wimbledon titles, is now the favourite to win the tournament after top players Alexander Zverev and Novak Djokovic were knocked out early.
This is only Alcaraz’s second time playing in Monte-Carlo — he lost his first match in his debut appearance in 2022.
Next, he will face rising French star Arthur Fils in the quarter-finals on Friday. Fils, 20, reached his third straight Masters quarter-final this season after beating 2023 champion Andrey Rublev 6-2, 6-3.
Fils is hoping to go one step further this time, after falling in the quarter-finals at both Indian Wells and the Miami Open earlier this year.
