Carragher Criticises Robert Sanchez as Chelsea Lose to Liverpool
Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez has come under fire from football pundit Jamie Carragher following the Blues’ 2-1 loss to Liverpool. Carragher criticised Sanchez for failing to deal with Curtis Jones’ decisive goal, which came in the 51st minute of the match.
Curtis Jones was Liverpool’s hero, scoring the winner and also winning the penalty that led to the Reds’ opening goal. Carragher, a Liverpool legend and Sky Sports pundit, was unimpressed with Sanchez’s efforts, blaming the goalkeeper for not being aggressive enough in his area. He also criticised Reece James for not doing enough to stop Jones.
Speaking after the game, Carragher said:
“It was poor from Chelsea. Reece James was too slow, and Sanchez didn’t do enough. Jones had a bad touch, but the goalkeeper should have been quicker to close him down. If Chelsea want to return to the top, they need a new goalkeeper.”
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca defended Sanchez’s performance, saying he was pleased with the Spaniard’s efforts despite the defeat.
“I’m very happy with Robert,” Maresca said. “He’s been fantastic, not just in building from the back but also making key saves.”
Chelsea will look to bounce back when they face Panathinaikos in the Conference League on Thursday, October 24.
